Mud, mud, mud!

Busy weekend with alot of mud!
The chicken house was completely jet washed and dried. It was also moved and a small portion of the roof covered with some wood. This will keep the students dry when they go and collect the eggs.
There was clear evidence that birds had been feeding from the feeders we made two weeks ago! This is exciting news but we must top up the feeders next week.
Carpet was cut up and laid along the edges of the polytunnel to stop weeds growing inside, and sleepers were put in position to make two new beds in the polytunnel. They will need filling with the last of the soil. Looking forward to this job next week :)
We also planted a few leek seeds to see what they would do as well as some lovely poppies.
Thank you to Gary for heading up the work party last week. Lots of work was done!
Exciting week next week as we have our new sign to cement into the ground!!!

Chickens' First Birthday Party

We had a wonderful time in the Garden today. The chickens really enjoyed their birthday party! We made three different types of bird feeder. The first one, we tied string onto pine cones and coated them in peanut butter and bird seed. The second one, we mixed together bird seed with lard and filled yoghurt pots. Lastly, we filled empty fizzy drink bottles with bird seed and inserted wooden perches for the birds. We then used the empty willow wigwams we made for the beans and hung the bird feeders to them. We also hung some off the fruit cage structure.

We then enjoyed a tea break with beetroot and chocolate cake! The cake was so yummy! We used beetroot from the Garden and eggs that the chickens had laid.

Also in the Garden, more spring bulbs were planted and the compost was added to. Lots to still prep in the Garden for winter.

Sorry all the photos are in black and white! I managed to switch the settings on the camera without noticing! Photos here.

Spring bulbs

To start off work in the Garden this November, we planted some spring tulips. They look very pretty in the pictures but I'm sure they will be stunning when they really bloom! We also have some early peas to plant out next week. The onions we planted a few weeks ago have already started to sprout green bits :)
We managed to collect four huge bags of leaf litter. Give this 18 months and we will be knee deep in good quality leaf compost.
Phil had got some lovely vinyl prints done, and he and Gary recycled some wood from the Garden to make frames to wrap the vinyl around. We have now put these up in the coffee shed to brighten the place up!
We also constructed some bamboo pole triangles and hung shiny CDs from them to keep the birds away from the newly grown o
We spent the last hour or so doing odd bits and pieces around the Garden and having a clear up. We also watched the chickens have a very long dust bath! They are so funny to watch! Like cats with catnip!
All day we were supplied with hot chocolate and marshmallows toppd with squirty cream! This set us all up for bonfire night!
Join us next week to celebrate the chickens' first birthday! We will be making bird feeders and enjoying cake :)
