Celebration!

I have had a fantastic day and I am sure the 80+ people who shared the day with us had a great time!
We all got the chance to carve wood, weave willow and make chutneys. Plus the lunchtime BBQ was topped off with homemade burgers and chutneys made in our very own garden. YUM! The beetroot one was my favourite. It went so well with my burger!
This was a lovely chance to meet families from West Hill School and members of the community that came out to support us. The feedback was extremely positive and we even signed up some new members. What a lovely way to end summer ti
October is going to be a busy month with a stall at the Leatherhead Festival and another at Farmham Maltings (details can be found on our Events page).
Thank you for all those who came to see us today. We really enjoyed your company and are looking forward to seeing you in the future!
Very happy Kayleigh :D

The Attack of the Weeds

I have never seen so many weeds! The polytunnel is so prone to fast growing weeds I think we find it quite hard to keep up with them. Finally this week we propped up the squashes and cucumbers and weeded around them.
There was also a quick repair job on the bean wigwams and hooks were put up in the sheds to help us keep things tidy. Simon turned the compost, Gary whizzed round with the lawn mower and the strimmer broke down on us!
Everyone helped to plant out the poor peppers that have been sitting patiently outside. I know it is a little late for them to go in the ground but they are bearing fruit and hopefully they will get a bit bigger before we pick them.
I think we all had time to reflect on how far the garden has come :)
Looking forward to more crafting with Ruth next week. Mini wigwams and pickles to make :)
ALSO... Look out for our Celebration event on the 24th September 2011....!

Woodwork Workshop Take 2

Thank you Gary for looking after the website and Facebook whilst I was away :)
So much was achieved this week that I need to split it all up! Our continuing partnership with the Making Surrey project has created some amazing things for the garden.

WOODWORK
The thrones have been completed! All the backs and fronts of the seats have been beautifully carved and now stand proudly in place in the now filled and planted herb beds. The sign is coming along beautifully. One more workshop session on that and it will be ready to go up on the main path. A sign was also started for the chicken coop!
PICKLE MAKING
In addition to the woodwork carving that was taking place, a group of us started on making pickles and jellies from produce in our own garden! We picked many a bean, onion and spring of mint and used some fruit and veg from various people's personal gardens.
GARDENING
Bit of sad news :( Our tomatoes (and I mean all 100 plants) have been hit with tomato blight. The decay and rotting of our plants is caused by a fungus-like organism in wet weather. With all the rain we had over the last few weeks this has meant ideal conditions for the fungus. The rotting on the plant was so bad we salvaged any green tomatoes in hope they will ripen off the plant or to make chutneys with. The rest of the plant matter was burnt to decrease the spread of disease. No more tomatoes there for a few years :(
On another note, the herb beds have been filled and planted out with a huge array of herbs. Potatoes and beans were harvested. The pumpkins are HUGE! Looking forward to pumpkin carving and Dina's pumpkin pie when they are ready :D

Next week will be a little more low key but keep an eye out for events for the next 6 weeks :)
Photos in the gallery,
Happy Kayleigh :)
