Potato harvest

What an incredible day!
Our first potato harvest from three different plants! These were shared out between us all and we will swap cooking suggestions next week! The potato plants that we harvested from we recycled back into out compost bins.
Also Jim Gosling came back to dig out two more beds and help fill one of them with soil so we could plant out the cabbages.
Eight beautifully crafted dwarf bean supports were weaved by Claire (photos in the Picture Gallery) and some herb cuttings were taken by Chris and Pat in preparation for the herb beds.
All but 5 of the sunflowers have been claimed for the growing competition to which there will be a prize for the child who can grow the tallest flower and another prize for an adult who can do the same.
Thanks to everyone for all the lifting and shifting of soil today. Another tough day but it will be worth it.

Sunflowers and rain :)

A pretty productive day inspite of the rain. We managed to choose our plants for the sunflower growing competition before the rain came down on us. We all hid in the polytunnel for shelter and carried on with little jobs that needed doing. It felt quite homely with all the thunder and lightening happening outside!
Before the rain, the lettuces were thinned out, a bamboo climber frame for the sunflowers was started, the compost was turned and some more beans were planted.
Only a few photos were taken this week, mainly of the rain :S See them in the photo gallery!
Busy week next Saturday... Moving sleepers and soil and possibly chickens.............!

Today was all about the flowers and creating the largest flower bed on the site. A huge effort was made by all. Lots of barrows of soil and raking it smooth. To top it off, we all had fun planting the flowers in teh new bed. All the sunflowers went out and next week we will be selecting one each for the sunflower growing competition!
On other news, Phil put the first lot of staging up in the polytunnel so potting has become much easier for us all. Chris did a fantastic job potting on 100 tomato plants!
Well done everyone!
Photos can be found in the picture gallery.

All about the beans

What a productive Saturday! I never thought we would see the garden change so much in one day. Two (nearly three!) vegetable beds were finished and the beans were moved from the polytunnel to outside. Another bean climber was weaved and the beginnings of a weaved flower took shape.
To top it all off, we got our first harvest of radishes! About 20 radishes were carefully pulled out and shared with everyone there. Everyone tried them and agreed they were the tastiest radishes we had eaten!
Great to see a few new faces today. Thanks to everyone!
Check out the photos in the Picture Gallery.
